The Forbidden Fruit in the Garden of Eden Was an Apple

The Bible never names the fruit; the apple was a later European add-on

✗ The myth everyone repeats

Adam and Eve, the serpent, the tree, and the apple. Everyone knows the apple. It is in every painting, every cartoon, every 'forbidden fruit' metaphor, and the lump in a man's throat is even called an Adam's apple from where it supposedly stuck. The apple is so welded to the story that it feels like scripture.

✓ What is actually true

Open Genesis and there is no apple. The text just says 'the fruit of the tree' in the middle of the garden, species unstated. Jewish and early Christian traditions guessed at figs, grapes, pomegranates, even wheat. The apple likely sneaked in through Latin: when the Bible was translated into Latin, the word for evil, 'malum', is almost identical to the word for apple, 'malum', and the pun was too good for medieval artists to resist. By the Renaissance the apple was locked in, and Milton's Paradise Lost sealed it in English. So the most famous fruit in Western culture is a translation gag that got out of hand. The Adam's apple name came afterwards, riding the same myth. The tree was real in the story. The apple is fan fiction.
