Goldfish Only Grow to the Size of Their Tank

Goldfish do not naturally cap their growth to the bowl, and the reason a bowl-bound goldfish stays small is grim, not convenient. In a cramped tank, growth gets stunted by poor water quality, stress, and a build-up of their own waste and growth-inhibiting hormones, which is a sign of an unhealthy fish, not a happily right-sized one. Given proper space, filtration, and care, goldfish are big, hardy fish that commonly reach 20 to 30 centimetres and can live for decades; ponds routinely produce goldfish the size of a forearm, and the record holders are genuinely enormous. The bowl does not lovingly shrink the fish to fit. It quietly poisons and cramps it into staying small while shortening its life. So the classic goldfish bowl is the aquatic equivalent of raising a dog in a cupboard. They are pond fish that we have been keeping in eggcups.
