Henry Ford Invented the Car

He perfected the assembly line; Karl Benz built the car decades earlier

✗ The myth everyone repeats

Henry Ford invented the motor car, put the world on wheels with the Model T, and turned the automobile from a dream into a driveway fixture. Ford and 'the car' are so linked that most people credit him with the whole machine.

✓ What is actually true

Ford did not invent the car. The first practical petrol-powered automobile is generally credited to Karl Benz in Germany, who patented his Motorwagen in 1886, when Henry Ford was a 23-year-old still years from building anything. Others, like Gottlieb Daimler, were also building cars in the 1880s. By the time Ford founded his company in 1903, automobiles already existed and were sold to the rich. What Ford actually did was revolutionary in a different way: he refined the moving assembly line, slashed production costs, and made the Model T cheap enough for ordinary workers, which genuinely changed the world. So credit him for mass production, not invention. He did not dream up the car. He worked out how to build it fast enough that you could afford one, which is arguably the bigger deal, just not the one the myth gives him.
