The Great Sphinx of Giza is missing its nose, and the favourite explanation is that Napoleon's troops, bored during the Egyptian campaign of 1798, used the face for cannon or musket target practice and blew the nose clean off. It is a tidy bit of 'arrogant Europeans wrecking ancient wonders' history that gets repeated at the pyramids to this day.
The nose was already gone, by a long way, before Napoleon was born. Sketches by the Danish traveller Frederic Louis Norden, drawn in 1737 and published in 1755, clearly show the Sphinx already noseless, roughly forty years before the French arrived. Arab historians writing in the 1400s blamed a Sufi named Muhammad Sa'im al-Dahr, who reportedly defaced it in the 14th century as an act against idol worship, and was supposedly executed for it. So the damage is centuries older than the myth, and Napoleon is innocent on this one charge at least. The story sticks because it fits a satisfying narrative of European vandalism. The actual culprit, if the medieval account holds, was a zealot with a chisel, not an artilleryman with time to kill.
