A polygraph does not detect lies; it detects arousal. It measures things like heart rate, breathing, and sweating, all of which can rise when you are nervous, and nervousness is not the same as lying. An innocent person terrified of being disbelieved can light up the chart, while a calm, practised liar, or a psychopath, can sail through; people can also beat it with countermeasures.
