✗ The myth everyone repeats
Peptic ulcers result from excessive stress, spicy food, and high stomach acid production; acid reduction and stress management are the primary treatments.
✓ What is actually true
For decades, stress and diet were blamed for ulcers, leading to restrictive diets and acid-reducing medications. In 1982-1984, Barry Marshall and Robin Warren discovered that Helicobacter pylori bacteria colonizes the stomach lining and is the primary cause of most ulcers. Marshall famously infected himself with the bacterium to prove causation. This discovery revolutionized ulcer treatment from symptomatic management to antibiotic cure, and Marshall and Warren won the 2005 Nobel Prize in Medicine.
